Event recap: ULI Netherlands Impact Tables
Last week on Thursday we organized our Impact Tables, an event on impact investing.
October 11, 2022
Human activities, like the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, and other activities. This leads to a global rise in temperature. For each decade, there is an increase in global temperature of about 0.2 C.
Why does it matter?
Unchecked climate change could cost the global economy US$178 trillion in net present value terms from 2021–2070. The human costs would be far greater: a lack of food and water, a loss of jobs, worsening health and well-being, and a reduced standard of living.
What is the effect of real estate on global warming?
The buildings sector alone contributes to 40% of global carbon emissions, 70% are produced by building operations, while 30% come from construction.
While the global building floor area is expected to double by 2060. The amount of new floor area to be added to the global building stock is equivalent to the entire New York City, every month, for 40 years.
What can we do about it?
The only way to do it is through decarbonization. Decarbonization is about reducing CO2 emissions resulting from human activity, with the eventual goal of eliminating them.
When done right, decarbonization not only addresses global environmental challenges but can also contribute to cost savings, social equity, tenant and employee health, and well-being.
