Recap: Environment Act session
On September 27, we organized a session on the Environment Act in collaboration with Anneke Franken van Bloemendaal and Arjan Kaashoek.
Building materials, such as steel and cement, also carry embodied carbon resulting from their mining, processing, manufacturing, transportation and installation.
Carbon is embedded in nearly every phase of building construction and operation.
What does it mean?
It means, that
👨‍💼 Every real estate owner
🙋‍♀️ Every tenant
🏢 And every construction, energy, transportation, design, and technology company involved in the real estate industry
As well as many others are in control and responsible for emissions caused by real estate.
What can we do about it?
To lower the number of emissions it is important to acquire the following principles:
♻️   Reuse includes renovating existing buildings, using recycled materials, and designing for deconstruction.
⏬   Reduce includes material optimization and the specification of low to zero-carbon materials.
🙅‍♀️   Switch includes the use of materials that are plant-based like wood, cork, hemp, and algae that have the property to capture atmospheric carbon.
